With only a short time left for the 2024 presidential election here in America, I’d like to offer you a short prayer that you can pray to reduce your anxiety about the situation.
I never get political with anything. I don’t post, preach, or write about elections.
But before offering that prayer, I need to lay a few foundations about the election.
“The 2024 Presidential Election is HUGE!”
Every election period, someone says, “This is the most important election of all time.”
Epictetus, the Stoic philosopher, expressed a thought regarding the relationship between perception and emotional distress:
"Men are not disturbed by things, but by the view they take of them."
There might be some crucial things riding on this election.
But I also think that some of our anxiety about it stems from a blown-up perception during election season.
It’s just “hot” right now. There’s a lot of buzz about it—conspiracy theories, fear, etc.
Don’t let the “talk” infiltrate your mind and steal your peace.
Instead, let’s calm down and go back to the drawing board.
The “drawing board” is usually in the Boss’s office…
Here’s What I’m Looking For in a Candidate As a Christian
I don’t want to say, “It doesn’t matter who wins.” It does, in fact, matter. Whoever wins will have a certain effect on our country.
As a Christian, I believe it’s best to vote for the candidate that you feel is best in alignment with the Word of God before you vote for secular purposes (economy, social issues, etc.).
Who has my vote? Whoever will stand for principles and laws that best produce the world God wants.
I’m not voting for the candidates themselves. We’ve probably never had a truly saved candidate, but what do I know?
But I’m observing their policies from a Christian standpoint.
Who is closer to a Biblical stance on social issues?
Who talks more (and has possibly done something) about preserving religious freedom?
Who will be better at “thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven?”
Next, I look into secular things that are important to me.
Who will create a more robust economy and military?
Who will uphold the Constitution better?
Who will preserve a more free and capitalist society?
Who will more efficiently control our borders?
Personally, I don’t care who seems “meaner” or who has the worst “cackling laugh.”
Scriptures to Consider About the Election
1 Timothy 2:1-2 ESV
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
No matter who wins, pray for the “king” in a high position.
Why? So we can live a peaceful, quiet, Godly, and dignified life.
Jeremiah 29:7
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
This was written right before the “for-I-know-the-plans-I-have-for-you” scripture.
As the Israelites went into slavery for their centuries of wrong-doing, God didn’t tell them to pray for the destruction of the Babylonians.
He told them to pray for their welfare. He wanted the city where His people would be held in chains to prosper.
Because in their welfare, they would find their own welfare.
After the election, pray for the welfare of our country and administration. After all, it’s our welfare.
Romans 13:1
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
I posted this one time during the Biden administration, and a bunch of Christians got mad at me.
Unless a person is actively trying to steal our freedoms, rid the land of God, and take our property and lives, we still need to pursue a peaceful relationship with them.
There are things I’ll fight over. But other things that don’t disrupt my life, my Christianity, and my freedom, I’ll chalk up to a dumb government decision and still pray for them.
For example, a candidate could say, “I’m making October the national drag-queen month!”
I’ll sigh and shake my head.
But does this mean I should disobey the law by jumping the fence of the White House and breaking in so that I can shout at the administration about God?
I don’t think so.
I would still be subject to the Constitution's overall law and seek a peaceful relationship with the government.
Proverbs 21:1
The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.
Know that the “king’s” (in our case, our “president’s”) heart is like running water falling into God’s hand.
If He tilts His hand to the left, it’ll flow that way. If He sways to the right, it flows that way.
Pray that the next president’s heart will be sensitive to God.
Here Is the Prayer to Pray to Extinguish Fear and Uncertainty Concerning the Election
The older I get, the more interested I become in politics.
But I have never let it bring fear and chaos into my life.
However, I completely understand why others might be experiencing this. The chatter and outcomes of the presidential election are impossible not to see.
Besides spending more time in God’s Word than on the news, here is a prayer to help you rebuke fear, chaos, anxiety, and uncertainty.
“Lord, as with every other election, you are still on the throne. I want you to sweep through me and extinguish any fear and anxiety I might have. I’m sorry if I’ve been thinking more about politics than you lately. I pray for our government so that I can live a quiet, peaceful, Godly life. Lord, I want to spread the Gospel and know you more, and I know that this could be difficult if there is a bunch of chaos in the world with our government. So, bring them peace and lead them in the right direction. Even if my candidate doesn’t win, I pray for their welfare and prosperity so that this can extend to our country, making it my prosperity. Help me love the candidates, especially those I don’t want to vote for. If they win, help me find a peaceful mindset towards them. I will still acknowledge that government in my life. Make their heart like a stream of water flowing into your hand. I rebuke anxiety in my heart. I tell all of the fear, opinions, and doubt to leave my mind right now, in Jesus’ name. I will focus more on my God and pray for peace during this time. In Jesus’ name.”
